Herbert Feigl (1902-1988) est le premier membre fondateur du Cercle de Vienne emigre aux Etats-Unis. Son maitre Moritz Schlick (1882-1936), avec qui il correspond de 1923 jusqu'en 1935, exerce une influence sur sa reflexion concernant la theorie physique dans la question du physicalisme. Le probleme des fondements de la biologie et de la psychologie, au centre de l'essai de Feigl Le physique et le mental (1958) ne trouve de solution provisoire que dans les tentatives de la psychologie behavioriste de se rapprocher d'une conception scientifique du monde. Une nouvelle forme de langage dans le domaine du psychique est exigible. Cette nouvelle methode de l'analyse logique definit un nouvel empirisme et un nouveau positivisme. Une nouvelle theorie de l'identite doit etre construite entre les critiques de Carnap et les espoirs des neurosciences naissantes. L'autocerebroscopie, son invention du cerveau en train de se voir penser, a ete le moyen pour l'empirisme de resoudre le paradoxe de la traduisibilite des enonces concernant les objets physiques en enonces concernant les donnees phenomenales. En allant de la physique au mental, Feigl propose en philosophie un materialisme non reductionniste qui renouvelle la traduction des enonces et qui etablit les conditions d'un cerveau conscient de son corps.
